Indigenous Case Studies
- Kleinhardt completed a feasibility assessment and development of alternative business models for a proposed timber milling and processing operation based on timber cleared from the bauxite mining leases on western Cape York. This has enabled the project to proceed to the next stage with the prospect of establishing a 10,000 cube per annum mill, plus a finishing mill producing hardwood timber flooring and mouldings.
- A business plan was prepared for a proposed prawn farm for the Badu Island Council. The plan included assessment of logistics, operations, markets and a financial model, which indicated the project was not viable, so saving Council from a poor investment.
- Business plans for the management of housing stock and outstation development were prepared for both the Hopevale and Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Councils. This facilitated reporting to the funding bodies.
- A complete business review of 'Queensland Aboriginal Creations' a government owned retail operation, based in Brisbane was conducted and options prepared for redevelopment, direction, location and management. The project also considered better linkages with arts and crafts production in communities across Queensland.
- Kleinhardt was appointed to prepare a 'Cape York Indigenous Employment Strategy' for Australian and State Government departments. This involved development of strategies to facilitate more local Cape York people obtaining meaningful jobs. Strategies developed emphasised practical actions that address foundation issues, as well as the generation of new jobs. Extensive consultation with Aboriginal people was a central part of this assignment.
- A Community Plan was developed for Hopevale, which contributed to the preparation of the community for engagement in the Queensland Government for Hope Vale 'Negotiation Table' process.
- An evaluation report was prepared for the Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council on a three year Consumer Affairs Project encompassing 17 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This report enabled the Council to obtain continuing support for the program.
- Facilitation and preparation of strategic, business planning and training needs analysis and policies and procedures for Bumma Bippera Media, Cairns. This enabled the business to move forward in the delivery of services to Indigenous communities.
- Facilitation of Alcohol Management Plans for the Yarrabah and Mornington Island communities, involving extensive community consultation, workshop techniques and preparation of reports examining associated issues, with recommendations for actions. This enabled the communities to respond to the Queensland government requirement for Alcohol Management Plans with proposals acceptable to each community.
- Kleinhardt was engaged by Torres Strait Regional Authority to facilitate development of a Torres Strait regional Tourism organisation. This led to the establishment of an organisation and subsequent development of organisational framework and business plan.
- In addition to the above, a wide range of individual Indigenous businesses have been assisted in their establishment and / or provided advice to underpin their ongoing viability.
